Property Description

This mixed use, downtown, commercial building has been renovated and serves as a hub for five businesses. Also known as the Galveston Carriage Place, it was built for and owned by Frederick D. Schmidt, who utilized the building for his businesses. The 1901-1902 Galveston City Directory noted Schmidt was a blacksmith, horseshoer, carriage manufacturer and agent for Springfield rubber tires. The Directory noted that Schmidt resided upstairs at the same location and the Schmidt family maintained ownership of the building until 1944. Records indicate that the original building was built in 1865 and was assumed to be either completely or partially damaged during the 1900 Storm. Today it functions as a modern business facility in Downtown within footsteps of the Cruise Terminal, many restaurants, entertainment and shopping destinations.
